Mayor Rob Burton‘s Message:
The announcement that the Glen Abbey lands will be conserved is precisely what Town Council, Halton Regional Council and Oakville residents have been working towards for many years. I want to thank the committed volunteers in the community who worked tirelessly to ensure that the Glen Abbey property was conserved. The thousands of letters written to the Province made a difference and showed how our community is an engaged community. The support from Premier Doug Ford, Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister, Steve Clark and our local MPPs Stephen Crawford and Effie Triantafilopoulos cannot be understated in saving Glen Abbey, as Minister Clark said in his Statement, “for future generations”.
Regional Chair Gary Carr‘s Message:
I’m pleased to share that Ontario Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Steve Clark has secured a commitment from Glen Abbey golf club’s owner, ClubLink, to withdraw its appeals with the Ontario Land Tribunal. ClubLink has also withdrawn its plans for development and will continue the operation of Glen Abbey as a golf course.
The Glen Abbey lands have historically served an important role within the local heritage and community in Oakville and Halton Region. They are home to a world-renowned golf course that has hosted the Canadian Open numerous times and has provided an interconnected network of green space that supports wildlife protected under the Endangered Species Act, 2007.
ClubLink had applied for development approvals to permit 3,222 residential units and over 127,000 square feet of office commercial, retail commercial and market retail space on the Glen Abbey lands, which would result in the permanent loss of the world-renowned golf course and green space. With your efforts and engagement, we have been able to ensure that these lands are protected for future generations to enjoy.
Thank you to Premier Doug Ford and Minister Steve Clark for their continued support and advocacy on behalf of residents on this issue. I’d also like to thank each and every one of you that called, emailed and wrote letters to your local elected officials—these actions truly made a difference. Together, we keep Halton a great place to live, work, raise a family and retire.
MPP Stephen Crawford’s Message:
Hi I’m Stephen Crawford, member of Provincial Parliament for Oakville. I’m standing outside the Glen Abbey Golf Course to share fantastic news. On Friday July 9th, the Glen Abbey Golf Course was saved from development by the Ontario Government.
The Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing reached out to the owner and secured their commitment to withdraw development applications and appeals before the Ontario Land Tribunal.
I know how important this issue was for our community. I received thousands of emails over the past several months to preserve this significant green space. Since taking office in 2018, I have been dedicated to saving it.
Well Oakville, we did it. With your support and working together, we have saved a treasure part of our community for generations to come. I wish everyone a very safe, and enjoyable summer.

Town Councillor Cathy Duddeck’s Message:
Saving Glen Abbey for future generations is a direct result of teamwork at its best! Dedicated volunteers, the broader community and elected representatives working together on a common goal always has positive results!
Town Councillor Allan Elgar’s Message:
Congratulations and thank you to the hard working and determined volunteers at the centre of the Save Glen Abbey movement. They worked for years galvanizing the public and lobbying decision makers. We are all winners as a result of their efforts.
Town Councillor Peter Longo‘s Message:
Over the last year I worked with the Provincial Government on two key initiatives, the first was securing PPE, medical and testing supplies for the healthcare sector in support of the provincial Covid-19 pandemic response, and the second was to reinforce the importance of Glen Abbey for the citizens of Oakville.
I had the opportunity on several occasions to speak with Premier Ford to support the protection of Glen Abbey given its incredible significance to the Town of Oakville, and the need for the voice of the people to be heard and supported by the Provincial Government. The support of Premier Ford, Minister Clark, MPP Crawford and MPP Triantafilopoulos was instrumental in the protection of Glen Abbey!
I am also so thankful for the extensive efforts of SGA, We Love Oakville, Oakvillegreen and others who wrote to Premier Ford, Minister Clark and the Province to reinforce this message – together we did it!!!
MPP Effie Triantafilopoulos‘s Message:
I want to thank Minister Clark for securing the owner’s commitment to protect Glen Abbey from development. Preserving Glen Abbey is important to people in Oakville and beyond, and our community has worked tirelessly together for its preservation. The government has listened to the voices of our residents and respected our wishes to preserve Glen Abbey. The course is internationally renowned, hosting the Canadian Open thirty times. It is an important part of Oakville’s history and will remain a vital part of its future. As your MPP, I am committed to preserving green spaces in our community. That’s why I introduced a resolution to expand our Greenbelt, which the Ontario legislature passed unanimously. When I was a candidate in 2018, I committed to doing everything I could to preserve Glen Abbey as a golf course. I am proud to stand with MPP Crawford and say, promise made, promise kept.
